Hakumei

Printed in Malaysia, one at a time, after you ask for it.

There is no warehouse. Every shade begins as a spool of filament and a few hours of machine time, started the day after somebody buys it.

The workshop

A lampshade a machine printed?

Yes. That is the point, not the compromise.

A shade is the one object in a room you look straight at with a light behind it. Printing lets the wall be two continuous beads of material — 0.84 mm in all — which is thin enough that the material itself glows. Nothing moulded gets that thin and holds its shape.

What it is made of, exactly.

No adjectives. These are the numbers the workshop works to.

0.84 mm

Two walls thick

Two continuous walls of translucent PLA, 0.42 mm each, with no infill and no solid layers. Thin enough that the material itself glows, and two walls rather than one so that the paler colours still read as colour when the lamp is lit.

Visible

The layer lines stay

You can see and feel where the nozzle laid each pass. They are not sanded out, because they are the honest record of how the thing was made — and because sanding a 0.84 mm wall would go straight through it.

5 + 5

Colour is not a finish

Five translucent PLA colours for the parts that glow, five matte colours for the rest. Through two thin walls the shade's colour becomes the colour of the light: Mellow Yellow, Cherry Pink, Lavender and Ice Blue light a room softly; Orange glows deep and warm.

LED only

PLA, every printed part

Every printed part is PLA, and an LED bulb is the only one that goes in: anything hotter is more than a printed lamp is made for.

What it is printed in.

Printed entirely in PLA, a plastic made from plant sugars - from crops such as corn - instead of oil.

The parts that glow are translucent PLA, two beads thick; the bases, backplates, rings, bands and tops are matte PLA.

A printed lamp is not made for heat. That is why every lamp ships with an LED bulb, why no other kind should ever go in it, and why a lamp should not sit in hot direct sun.

Each spool varies very slightly in tint, so two lamps bought months apart may not match exactly. For lamps that must match, order them together.

Mid-print

Three kinds of light, made to order.

Table lamps, pendants and plug-in wall lights. Each one is printed after it is ordered, in parts held by magnets, with every part in the colour you choose.
